I read and know unfortunately only today that the Great J.C. is passed
away in August. I'm very sad. I have always studied his excellent card
creations and many of those are in my repertoire. His book The commercial magic of
J.C.Wagner for me is a Gold Bible and one of the best book that I have ever read.
Thanks J.C.for your prcious contributions in our art. R.I.P. David.

I bought JC's Commercial Magic DVD earlier this year. Then I saw JC's name in
the Get Well section of The Linking Ring. I sent JC a get well card. About 3 weeks later
he called me. It made my day. What an honor to get a phone call from JC Wagner! I then
bought More Commercial Magic. I am going to bartending school next month to do bar magic.
You will be greatly missed by very many, JC.

I met JC in 2007 and he became a good friend of mine instantly, I have
been around the world and have met many people, but very rarely do we have the opportunity
to meet someone that imparts to us a smile and is so loving and gracious. I often
visited my friend at the Little Club on Fridays and Saturdays and I looked forward in
doing so. The last time I was with JC in July of 2010, we had a lady take our
picture, me and JC standing side by side, smiling and proud and feeling good,
but the pictures didn't come out, JC said, "the pictures didn't come out, do
you want them to take another one",' I said, "no, don't worry we will have
the opportunity to take other pictures later", I really thought we would and that the
occasion would come around again, but that occasion never happened. When I first
heard of JC's departure I was sad that I didn't have another set of pictures taken.
The pictures however would have faded, but the friendship and brotherly
love we shared and the fun he placed in my heart, as we posed for the pictures,
with our arms around each others shoulders and our smiling faces is imbeded in my
soul and those pictures shall never fade!. JC once told me why he performed magic,
and the reason he said was that it made people smile and laugh and that it
brought out the child in them and although I don't have the pictures that never
took, the smiles and laughter and childlike fun he brought out in me is
forever imbedded in my soul, and shall never cease, as his blue eyes didn't as he
did his card tricks. You see those pictures would have long since faded, but I
shall proudfully forever hold in my heart, those smiles and the continuing laughter
that he discovered in me and those smiles shall never fade, I love you my brother me
and Priscilla thank you very much for permantly placing the picture of your laughter in
our hearts, Gregory H. and Priscilla B.,

I first met JC back in the early 90s (91-93?). In the later 90's, he was
bartending at the "West End" bar in north Pacific Beach, San Diego. One night, I
was sitting at the bar tippin' a few beers while JC was working. Soon there was a lull in
his work and he said, "Howard, check this out". I don't remember what he said
after that, but he wanted to show me his latest-and-greatest variant of his "Dyslexic
Queens " trick. Rather than putting his close-up mat on the bar, he walked around the
bar and kneeled down on the floor and did the trick for me on the beer-stained carpet of
the bar. LOL. The trick was beautiful!Anyway, I hope that version of the trick is
published somewhere. It was one of the best tricks I'd ever seen.JC, Rest In Pease, my

Although we had only met once, we did manage to spend a good 2 1/2 hours
together in the bar at the Delta Hotel in Kitchener Ontario at the CAM convention this
past May. Although we had never met before, J.C. told me that knew all about me and that I
had 30+ years in the magic business. I can only say that those 2/12 hours is by far the
highlight of my career in magic. The reminissing we did and the way he fried the
bartenders was something I will always remember and treasure. One would be hard pressed to
find another human being as kind and warm as J.C. I am so thankful for that meeting.
I will miss him. Rest well J.C. Phil

I met J.C. in April of this year at MAWNY in Batavia NY. He was attending the
FFFF Convention. After MAWNY, Derick Finn and i drove him to Kitchener Ontario, Canada for
the CAM Convention, and he stayed at Derick and Diane's home for the Convention. He was so
down-to-earth, genuinely friendly and funny, and a pleasure to "hang out" with
for a couple of days prior to the CAM Convention. After meeting for breakfast, Derick and
i took him pipe shopping in Hamiltion Ontario. (He sure loved his pipes) Next day; Derick
and i, ventriloquist Mike Robinson, his nephew Justin, and Justin's friend Dave, took JC
to Morrissey Magic in Toronto. Later that evening at Derick's he asked if i would make him
some gaffs for an old off the market packet effect. Of course! But what really blew me
away was when i showed him a coin thru card effect i made up from a Linking Ring Parade
column, he asked if i would make that gaff for him. I nearly peed myself! What an honor.
From reading these other comments J.C. Wagner was a positive influence on everybody who
had the pleasure of meeting him.

It is amazing how many memories come with a friendship that spans 4 decades.
You gave so many gifts that words fall far too short. Humility, passion, superior
attention to detail, and a love for the art are but a few of the qualities you brought to
the mix. Your incredible memory was often frighening and your smile so gentle. I know
everyone talks about your card work, but your presentation of the P.O.T. was the essense
of pure magic. Shawn, Kubota and I will toast a shot to you tonight and maybe a rum

JC and I shared a home together with another magician here in Arizona. He
helped "kidnap" me for my 30th birthday complete with blindfold, machine gun
water pistol and and drives to unknown locations. It was hilarious. I think too few knew
just a truly funny John was. He serenaded my wife and me as he rowed a boat for us -
a very romantic thing to do - while singing to us in the voice of Donald Duck! That was
JC. That sly I-just-ate-a-bird sort of smile that only JC had. We spent many nights
working on ideas and he told me he still had a notebook that inlcluded a Groucho trick we
came up with, all those 3 a.m. sessions we had at our old place in Paradise Valley, AZ.
He let me know that I knew what I was doing, even with cards, which was a huge
thing coming from one of my heros. JC was a math wiz that only someone like
George Sands could keep up with...entirely brilliant. I will always love his work and
brilliant mind, but most of all I will love the man and his friendship.

To a man who opened my eyes to the true art of magic from the beginning of my
interest in this hobby through his books and videos to more recent times that I had the
honor of spending every weekend with him for nearly two years. I learned more about
what it takes to be the man behind the bar than just another trick or two. He was
humble in every sense and he truly cared about the art of magic and those who have chosen
to practice it. He will be missed on more levels than even he every understood...
that's how great of a man he was. Thank you, J.C. for everything that you

When my son became interested in sleight of hand magic, JC's material was some
of the first I taught him. This past July, JC was nice enough to spend some time

JC was a true friend for life. The first time our paths crossed was in 1984 at
the Newport Beach Magic Island and our last handshake was on the seventh of last month at
the I.B.M. Convention in San Diego. That day, we had a few laughs when we spoke of
recollections of days gone by with he and Terry Lunceford. JC mentioned was really looking
forward to working the week at the Magic Castle. When we spoke of his health status, he
knew what was chasing him and he was ready at anytime to spit in its eye. Here's to you,
my friend. You will be sorely missed.

I was just with JC in San Diego and spent a very pleasant time at his bar
watching him work. I can't believe that my wonderful friend has passed away. He was a
brilliant magician, a great bartender, and, most important of all, one of the kindest and
nicest people I've met in many a year. I'll sadly miss him and his impish sense of humor.

I've just heard this, the saddest of news. To all of his friends and
family - please know that (as I've said before) JC was simply the best! He was most
giving of both his time and talents, and was always a pleasure to be around. Many in
magic are quite "filled" with themselves, but not JC. As a person, a
performer, a lecturer and renowned author, he was just "one of the guys."
He's left us with a legacy of his creativity, and this is something that will last for all
eternity in the world of entertainment.

May J.C. Wagner find peace and true love on the other side. My prayers are with
all of his friends and family during this difficult time. The best magic effect in the
world would be to bring someone back from the clutches of death, but we all know it's not
in our hands. May his legacy live on within the hearts of those who follow his teachings
and lessons. J.C. will now be entertaining the angels with his wonderful magic. Blessings
and comfort to his family.

JC, sorry I missed you in L.A. last week and that we couldn't get together in
San Diego, It was good to hear your voice anyway. I will be coming out to San Diego in a
few weeks and hope to find you with a deck in your hand and a twinkle in your eye. Please
understand that as long as I live, and the countless others you have touched live, you
will live. Every set I ever do contains at least one of your effects and I always preface
with "let me show you something my good friend J.C. Wagner taught me." I then
tear into any number of your tricks replete with "simultaneously and at the same
time" "cast a magic shadow over the deck" and "so far, so what".
I thought i was pretty damn good before i met you (not recognizing you and
"wowing" you, until Sandy leaned over and said "do you have any idea who
the f**k you're talking to?") But you saw something in me and took me under your wing
and i will be eternally grateful to you for that, and i will tell that story over and over
for the rest of my life. Others will tell their J.C. stories over and over as well and
perform your miracles over and over. You will always be with us, always! You used to point
to that picture in Commercial magic of you, Jennings, Skinner and Camaro and say "I'm
the only one left" well, let's keep it that way, God-willing. You have been a hero, a
mentor and mostly, a friend. I love you and hope to see you soon.

Hey, JC. I have never met you in person, but you definitely impacted my life. I
used a couple of your routines in my shows at Magic Island in Houston. My favorite was
your "Super Closer" It would be funny when magicians would come up to me after
my shows and ask if it was mine, if not what lecture did I pick it up at. (At that time,
most magicians seemed to think good stuff had to come from current lecturers. Surely not
some book that had been around for a while. Thanks for your "Super Closer" and so
much more you have contributed to the magic community.S.K. G.W. "Jay" Schwausch,

J.C.- This is a voice from long, long ago. We met
at the Abbott's close-up convention that included Don Alan and Simon Aronson. After
the convention, on your trip to another lecture (I think in Buffalo), you stayed the night
in my small hometown of Elyria, OH. There you stopped by and watched me work a night
at one of my first bars. Afterward, we had dinner and you gave me invaluable advice
that I've used ever since. I think of you often, and use several of your effects as
staples in my work. You're a great magician and an even better guy, and I wish you

moment. That's when I checked your website and discovered you were ill.
Strange how things happen! I would have never known if I hadn't been watching

We do not know each other. I have heard your name intoned respectfully
and with awe by others as one having influenced their magic or an effect they now do
better, or at all, because of what they learned from you. I just saw some of your
work on YouTube and have to admit that you turn even some of the old classics into
masterpieces of showmanship and handling with nuances revealing considerable thought,
experience, and insight into people as well as technical handling.I am writing as fellow
magician. I have missed out on knowing you thus far as I have done more platform work than
bar magic over the years (Nearly 50). I am writing to wish you well in your recovery
from the attack of colon cancer. Think of it as a nasty challenge TRICK of nature,
which, with persistence and a little luck you will, Lord willing, turn into a stunning
EFFECT of recovery and ultimate victory with grace in your inimitable style. As a pastor
and counselor, in addition to being a magician, I have had experience with many people who
have gone through what you are experiencing right now. It is no fun. Chemotherapy
and, where indicated, radiation following surgery have been great tools for knocking off a
variety of types of the little buggers. I am pleased you have chosen to go that
route. I do not recommend any of the natural methods, like tons of fresh carrot juice or
other things often suggested for building back your system until AFTER your final rounds
of conventional treatment. Because the viral buggers feed on your health and die or
switch-off when they think they have finished you; it is then that you need to make your
GREAT COME BACK. After they are dead then you are ready to FOOL THEM and
spring back to life. -- One more bit of advice concerning cancer: do eat throughout the
process of recovery even if you can't keep it all down. More people with cancer are lost
due to starvation than from the malady itself. Perhaps we will meet when you are well and
on a lecture circuit again. This time I will make it a priority to come and hear
what you have to offer.

JC my friend, A long time it seems has passed since the winter of 1978.
Spending that year with you and the gang in Aspen was truly one of the most exciting years
of all. I am very grateful to you and Deb for sharing so much of yourself. I used to love
watching you work the crowd, at the JOLLY JESTER , especially when youi were performing
your version of the Roy Benson Bowl routine. Your polished routines mad
a huge impression and the way you handled the whole situation was a great education. Thank
you very much. I'm glad to hear you are getting the care you need to get you on your way
to a quick recovery. I send my Best Wishes to you and your loved ones. All the Best

share in Phoenix. Shawn Greer and I were talking about the magic bar in Fountain Hills...
video games, balderdash and some great magic. I ran into one of our old customers a month
or so ago and he remembers the magic at Club Mirage with great fondness. After the holidays
I want to come over for a visit if that's okay. Best of love and strength to you....

Hi, J.C.Boy I hate writing that i'm in Los Angeles now - I always consider
myself a San Diego boy. When I was 13 I walked into Magicians' World on 30th St. and
Brad got me hooked with a thumb tip and a hot rod and I never looked back. That was
in 1980. 3 years later I was teaching the classes in the back room and two years
after that my family bought the shop from Chuck Martinez. As you'll recall, Brad
went off and started his own place and I dismally ran our shop into the ground after
stupidly moving it to Chula Vista. (Chula Vista!)Anyway, I'm up in L.A. now and am
always happy to see your smiling face and shake your hand. I'm friends with Syd and
have always been a big admirer of your work and legacy. I can't wait to see you
again. Until then, please know that you're in my thoughts and I hope you feel better
soon.Ruben Padilla

mean to me, the creative time I treasure, how you were there for me on my 30th birthday,
my memories of all the crazy times at the old house, or how much I respect and love you my
friend. But I do need to tell you that you can get out of lousy situations other ways than
this. So do that, get better PLEASE, or who is going to believe that I know anything about
cards without YOU backing me up? Seriously my friend, now heal up. Like it or not this
world needs you. I need you. We need to learn more from you and decipher things written
before too ;-) So heal up. All My Love, Healing and Blessings My Friend - Kenton

Mr. Wagner,We only met once, a couple years back when a bunch of
magicians who were doing a corp gig in SD were in town (Sid Seigel, Apollo Robbins, John
George, Doug Brewer, etc...) and stopped in for some fun. You did some very amazing
stuff that day, and I walked away knowing it aint about money and titles...its about
giving people a damn good time, and gaining the respect of your friends and peers in the
meantime. You obviously always did that in spades, sir. I have all your books, love
them, and consider you one of the true giants of close-up...and one of my inspirations for
sure. I will always chase good times and good friends, thanks to the good guys like

John, Don't know if you remember me--I knew you in school and sunday school and
was there at the creation (we were 14 as I recall). I lived down the hill on Tennyson St.
You stuck with it, but I dropped it after a year or so (but my sister still remembers a
couple of magic shows I put on for her and her friends.) Wondered if you were still
practicing and where you are these days. I would love to see you performing some day. Last
time I saw you was your bar in East San Diego maybe 30 years ago. From the comments it
looks like you are doing great. I myself am retired now and have a lot of time on my
hands, so if you're still in the area, let me know. Although I re-located to Riverside
County I still have property in San Diego and visit there every so often. Would love to
hear from you.Gary Page.

J.C. you are not only one of the best and most creative close-up people we
have, you are also one of the most humorous in real life!
It's always a treat when our paths cross, and I will never forget the daze when we all
lived in one house and stayed up jamming nightly until the sun came up (or someone fell
down). Too bad we can't recall all we created back then, but perhaps that's a
blessing in disguise!

Great to see some pictures of you on your site J.C. You look really well and
happy. Tell you my mum would have loved you in the 70's with that 'magnum' moustache! Your
book 7 secrets is what really kick-started my love of magic after reading 'Royal road'. I
noticed it in a magic dealers and it was quite cheap and the 'torn and restored card'
caught my eye! Little did I realise that it was one of the true classics of close-up
magic. Since that little book and the sentiments expressed in it I always thought you're a
pretty good guy. So it's good to find your web-site and see that you're still 'at it!'.

Just a quick note to say thanks for a great book. The commercial magic of....
book really inspired me and came at that moment in a magicians life when either he or
she's hit a rut and is performing the same material over and over again and wishing there
was something new. Or (as in my case) when I was still relatively green and needed a well
written tome with killer material to inspire and motivate me further.
Thanks.

You don't know me, but you are the "reason" that I am a magician. (or
at least a good one) You have been my favorite magician for over fifteen years and have
leaned more from your material than any ten things from other magic texts. I won a trip to
the Castle through Terry Luncford a few years back by being automatically entered in a
contest after watching an online bar video in which your were one of the features. You
were the reason that I paid to see it in the first place and then I won a trip tailor made
for my dreams since I was a child. Terry said that you were busy on the weekend that I was
out there, but he still managed to get me a signed copy of your book for my birthday.
Thank you Mr. Wagner for the love of magic that you have spread to me without even being
aware of me as an individual. It's amayzing how reading a persons life work lets you feel
as though you are freinds with them. I truly wish you all the best in magic and life

I have known you a long time, and what I know and remember the best about you
is that you truly love entertaining and performing your magic. You were wonderful then and
I'm sure you still are. I am just so happy that you are doing what you love again. As I
see by all the wonderful comments, alot of people are so happy to see that you are
"back". Keep up the great work, and keep them mystified. Debbie Wagner

I just met you last week in a little irish pub on Coronado Island. I had
a great time watching you perform some of your tricks. Thanks for the tips you gave
me. You put the spark back in my magic and I am starting to practice again.

JC, as I said in my email yesterday...you are one of the best and I for one am
glad you're back on the scene. I have a trip out to San Diego later this year.
One of the top priorities on that trip is to come see you perform.
You're the greatest!

Hi JC!
I am a great fan of yours, and it was a great pleasure to be able to meet you, and
introduce you in the close up shows at the International Day of Magic in London. I
hope your journey was enjoyable and you had a good time in the UK! I hope next time
you come you can arrange some lectures, and I look forward to the project you mentioned.
It should be the definitive work! Best Wishes

Watching your Commercial Magic video some ten years ago had a profound
influence on the way I now perform. The accolades in this guestbook regarding Card Under
Drink are not ill-placed and to this day your presentation is the best. Your natural charm
with the public allows you to perform some of the greatest close-up miracles ever
witnessed. Thanks for sharing some of your wisdom. Sadly, I can't make London in December
but it would be great to meet sometime in the future. Kind regards.
